How to teach sight words
- Five at a time. Show the word, say it, use it in a short sentence. Do not ask the child to sound it out first.
- See it in print. Point to the same word in a picture book or on a flashcard.
- Write it. Trace the word, then write it once from memory with the tracing maker.
- Review weekly. Keep the old words in the pile; a word is only “known” if it is read instantly a week later.
Questions
What are sight words?
Sight words are common words a child learns to recognise instantly, without sounding them out. Many are irregular (the, said, you) or appear so often that instant recognition speeds up every sentence.
Dolch or Fry?
Dolch is 220 words across five grade levels (Pre-K to 3rd grade). Fry is 1,000 words ranked by frequency. Start with Dolch for early readers; move to Fry for older or more advanced readers.
How many words at a time?
Five to ten. Repeat the same set for a week, then add two or three new words while reviewing the old ones.
Are the lists free to print?
Yes. Print this page for a classroom or family; the lists are free for classroom and personal use.
