Phonics

Phonics and CVC words: the first 50 words to blend

Once a child knows six letter sounds, they can read real words. This page lists 50 CVC words by vowel, with a simple blending routine and the mistakes to avoid.

What is a CVC word?

CVC stands for consonant–vowel–consonant: cat, dog, sun, pig. The vowel is short, the pattern is regular, and the word can be blended sound by sound — which makes CVC words the first real reading success for most children.

Start with six sounds

Teach the sounds, not the alphabet song: s, a, t, p, i, n. With those six you can already build sat, sit, pin, tap, nap, tin, pan. Add m, d, g, o, c, k next.

Short vowels: a /æ/, e /e/, i /ɪ/, o /ɒ/, u /ʌ/. Regional accents vary; use the sounds your child hears at school.

How to blend: three steps

  1. Point and say each sound. c – a – t, with one finger on each letter.
  2. Slide the sounds together. /k/ /æ/ /t/ → cat. Repeat three times.
  3. Change one letter. cat → bat → hat → mat. The child reads the new word, not a memorised list.

Common mistakes

  • Teaching letter names (bee) when blending needs letter sounds (/b/).
  • Starting with 26 letters instead of six useful sounds.
  • Doing worksheets before the child can blend orally.
  • Correcting every vowel; pick one sound to work on per week.

Questions

What is a CVC word?

A three-letter word made of consonant–vowel–consonant, such as cat, dog or sun. CVC words are the first words children can blend once they know a handful of letter sounds.

Which letter sounds should I teach first?

Start with s, a, t, p, i, n — they make the most early words (sat, pin, tap, nap, tin). Add m, d, g, o, c, k next.

How long should a phonics session be?

Five to ten minutes a day. Short, spoken blending beats a long worksheet session.

Do I need a worksheet?

No. Blending is oral first. Use the alphabet and tracing pages for letter formation, and the word search for word recognition.
