Name tracing worksheets

Type a name, print trace-then-write rows, and let the child practise with a model rather than from memory. Free, no sign-up, A4 or Letter.

How the name tracing maker works

  1. Type the name. Use the “Words to trace” box — one name or word per line.
  2. Choose the size and repetitions. Extra large for first attempts, large for daily practice, three repetitions per row.
  3. Print or save as PDF. The first word in each row is a solid model; the rest are light grey to trace.

For a class, type all the first names at once (one per line) and print one page per table group, or print individual sheets by typing one name.

Why trace-then-write beats copying

A child who copies a name twenty times without a model is practising their current guess, not the correct letter shapes. A model plus two or three traced copies gives the hand the correct path; the final blank repetition checks whether the pattern stuck. That is why the maker prints a solid model first and light copies after it.

For Chinese names, switch the language to Chinese: the same page becomes a 田字格 grid with the character and its pinyin, which teaches proportion as well as shape.

Questions

Is the name tracing generator free?

Yes. Type any name, choose the letter size and repetitions, and print. There is no account and nothing is uploaded.

Can I make a name tracing sheet in Spanish or Chinese?

Yes. For Latin names the sheet uses trace-then-write rows; for Chinese characters the tracing maker switches to 田字格 grids with pinyin.

How many times should a child trace their name?

Three to five careful repetitions with a model, then one from memory. Twenty mechanical copies teach less than five compared ones.

Can I save the sheet as a PDF?

Yes — press Print / Save as PDF in the maker and choose “Save as PDF” as the destination.
