Free phonics worksheets

CVC words, short vowels and word families — printable blending, tracing and word-search practice.

Updated 2026-10-29 · free for classroom and personal use

What you can print

Phonics practice works best when the same sound set appears in several formats. These pages reuse one word list across blending, tracing and reading:

  • CVC word pages — 50 three-letter words, grouped by short vowel, with sound-by-sound blending.
  • Word family pages — -at, -an, -en, -et, -ig, -in, -it, -op, -un and more, with the whole family on one page.
  • Tracing — trace and write each CVC word, with a picture cue.
  • Word search — find the same words in a grid, with an answer key.

Start at phonics, or go straight to the 50 CVC words.

Order of sounds

Teach short vowels in this order: a, e, i, o, u. Add one consonant at a time and read real words from the first lesson: cat, bat, mat. Keep the same vowel for a week before mixing vowels.

When CVC words are secure, move to sight words for the irregular words phonics cannot decode, and to letter tracing for formation.

Printing tips

All sheets are A4 portrait. Print the word pages single-sided so children can trace on the back. Answer keys print as a separate page.
